This fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture was built in 1893 by Mr. W.W. Hite of the Louisville and  Evansville Mail Company, and by 1899 became the home of distiller philanthropist Bernard Bernheim whose many charities included the Louisville Park System and the donation along with his brother Isaac of numerous statues and monuments including Louisville's Jefferson Memorial and the bronze sculptures of Kentuckians Henry Clay and Ephraim McDowell in the The National Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol.  Bernard Bernheim lived in this house until he passed away in 1925.  Four years later, Isaac W. Bernheim used much of the proceeds of the brothers' lifelong business to establish the 14,000 acre Bernheim Research Forest and Arboretum just south of the city.  Bernheim Forest as been one of Louisville's most popular and beloved excursion destinations for many decades.

The Bernheim Mansion facade is built of Kentucky limestone and its main exterior feature is a stunning triple archway entry.  The building contains over 8,000 square feet rich in carved woodwork.   One of the main interior features is a magnificent open winding staircase with an impressive three-story wall of stained glass windows.

In the heart of Old Louisville, the mansion is within walking distance of St. James Court and Central Park and the University of Louisville, and is just a few blocks south of downtown Louisville.
