A note about ornamental chain with rings
(what's under that ring?):

Under the ring on wide link chains, the metal is configured to
catch the ring and hold it in center.  Pictured above are
"hinged" links on some large chains.  The links
open by pivoting a screw hinge on one
side of the link.  On lighter weight chain
that is not soldered, the links can be spread with
pliers or  a chain tool.
